About Us

Our Mission: To change our community by helping people in need through responsible use of donations.

Our Vision: United Way of Southeastern Connecticut will be the recognized leader of challenging socially important projects while continuing to fund critical human services programs.  Our leadership will visibly change New London County for the better.

What We Do

Chances are many of your friends and neighbors have received assistance or support services from a United Way funded partner program. United Way of Southeastern Connecticut (UWSECT) unites organizations and people to help find solutions to our community's most pressing problems.

So, what does United Way do? Your gift to UWSECT is invested in four focus areas to obtain measurable results to improve the health and well-being of New London County. Our four priorities are: Community Wellness, Thriving Children, Basic Needs and Training and Education for Jobs. Research indicates that certain areas require particular attention in our community and therefore, all of United Way's efforts address at least one of these priorities or focus areas.

How do we do it? After the funds are raised each year, community volunteers go to work.  These volunteers are recruited throughout the community by signing up to participate in the Allocations Process through their workplace or by signing up here on our website.

What is the Allocations Process?  The Allocations Process is the avenue in which funds are divided and distributed to United Way partner agencies to support specific programs to help our community.  Each year, over 70 volunteers spend over 40 hours during a four month period reviewing each funded program.  This study includes visits to each agency, interviews with agency personnel and board members, analysis of agency budgets and audits, review of the total number of clients served, and evaluation of the overall performance of each program.  Upon conclusion of the study, the volunteers decide how the funds are dispersed to each program.

Does United Way administer its own programs?  Yes, throughout the years and through the voice of the community UWSECT recognized pressing needs that had to be fulfilled within our community. Therefore, UWSECT funds and administers, the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center, Project Warm-Up, and Individual Development Accounts.

Does United Way administer programs that it does not fund? Yes, UWSECT works within the community on a federal and state level to bring together people and organizations for the betterment of New London County.  Our Community Investment Department administers the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, Gorin’s Furniture Bank, and the FamilyWize RX Discount Cards.

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut's work is to unite the community.  We are all interdependent of one another.  When you reach out a hand to one, you influence the condition of all.  Together, united, we can change what we see in the world around us.

GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER. LIVE UNITED
