At United Way of Southeastern CT (UWSECT), Community Investment is the work we do. It is where the money goes and how it is distributed. It is UWSECT programs such as the Gemma Moran United Way Labor Food Center, Project Warm-Up and Day of Caring, it is collaboration and committee work, plus it is funding of a multi-million dollar network of 71 other partner programs run at over 29 health and human service agencies.

Accountability

The hallmarks of all UWSECT Community Investment efforts are community involvement and oversight. Monies are distributed via an Allocations Process which relies on 75+ community volunteers distributed across a number of Allocations Panels. Every year these panels review the work of funded agencies. Relying on site visits, interviews, outcomes data (measures) and financial records, volunteers decide where the money goes. If programs are not communicating results or do not meet the stringent set of UWSECT standards for funding—their dollars may be reduced or cut entirely. However, UWSECT is supportive of its agencies and also does its best to aid programs which are struggling.

A Hand Up Instead of a Hand Out

We have all heard the proverb credited to Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu “Give a man a fish, and feed him for a day. Teach him to fish, and feed him for life.” UWSECT believes we must feed the hungry person and teach him/her to fish, but that an even better aim is to create a strong community which allows all people to mature from childhood into “fishermen” right from the start.

Think Globally, Act Locally

United Way of Southeastern CT (UWSECT) focuses on local needs. The majority of funds are distributed to agencies who work right here in New London County. Even national and state wide agencies must use their partner program funds locally. It is the principle of do what you can and good work starts at home. Also, that way the services supported are also there to help you, your family members, colleagues and neighbors when help is needed most.

Priorities: Community and Kids

UWSECT supports an exclusive network of quality health and human service programs which work together to provide a holistic approach to a stronger community. Though all efforts are interwoven to some extent, programs are categorized as one of four target areas:

COMMUNITY WELLNESS

• THRIVING CHILDREN

• BASIC NEEDS and

• ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY & INDEPENDENCE

These topics cover a wide array of social needs including, but not limited to emergency food, fuel and shelter increased access to quality, affordable health and child care educational and enrichment opportunities for youth literacy and job training for adults, and special supports and social engagement for seniors and special needs populations.

Please join our UWSECT efforts to help our community grow, strengthen and LIVE UNITED.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. -- Margaret Mead, American cultural anthropologist (1901-1978)
