Sample Letters for Members of Organized Labor:

Option #1

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

The labor movement and United Way of Southeastern Connecticut have a lot in common. Both exist to help people. Both have the support of working men and women throughout the community. And both believe that every individual should be treated with dignity and respect.

Since 1946, organized labor has enjoyed a cooperative relationship with United Way -- assuring that needed services are available to members, their families, and their community.

With the kickoff of the annual United Way, it's our turn to give back to the community to ensure that help is there when we need it. When you are asked to make a pledge this year, I hope you will join me and give as generously as you are able at this time.

Because of you, our community will be stronger for generations to come.

Thank you.

Labor Leader

P.S. And if you or another member of organized labor needs help, visit United Way's website at www.uwsect.org to find resources available for you.

Option #2:

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

The AFL-CIO improves the lives of working families through an empowering collective voice that creates results that matter in our communities. Our 63-year partnership with United Way is one such result that has mattered.

United Way has a long-standing commitment to ensure caring powers are mobilized across the country to improve people's lives. As partners, we bring more individuals together and unify even greater caring powers, creating results that matter.

One great example of a partnership that gets results is the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center. The Food Center collects and distributes food to more than 85 free food sites in our community including shelters, pantries, day care centers, after-school programs, community meal sites, and programs for the elderly. In fact, they have helped provide more than 1.5 million meals each year to people in need.

The AFL-CIO and United Way understand the importance of bringing together voices, uniting workers, and strengthening communities to address crucial human needs. As partners, we can continue to create results like the Food Center that matter for working families.

I fully endorse and support the 2006 United Way campaign and ask you to do the same.

Sincerely,

Labor President
