Thank You to the A.B. CDL Driver Training Center!

You might have noticed that we're just a little excited here at United Way lately. We love our work to advance the common good, and we really love when we have something new and innovative to share that can change more lives and improve community conditions.

Last week we unveiled our new mobile food pantry truck at a launch event in New London. The custom refrigerated truck was made possible through our partnership with Connecticut Food Bank and through an extraordinary gift from CL&P. It's really a glorious vehicle to behold! I, for one, had no idea what it takes to implement a mobile pantry program. Appropriate sites need to be identified, coordinators trained, volunteers recruited, food items packed, and so and so on. Jennifer Blanco has been taking the lead in all of this and doing a terrific job.

We also needed to get Jack Hinds, Warehouse Specialist at the Food Center, trained and certified to drive the truck from the Food Center out to the distribution sites. For this, we turned to the A.B. CDL Driver Training Center in Waterford and Owner/Operator Thomas Moysey for assistance.

The course is 80 hours long and worth a value of $2,000, which Thomas so generously provided to us in-kind. Jack noted that the instructors at the Training Center were "patient, reassuring and very skilled."

Tom opened the Training Center in 2006 and has been a licensed driver himself for 33 years. He retired from the Connecticut State Police where he served proudly for twenty years on patrol and as a certified law-enforcement instructor. Tom's passion for public highway safety inspired him to start the Training Center and to develop the company's motto, "The A.B. Training Center is the driver's solution to safety."

We extend our sincerest thanks to Tom and the A.B. CDL Driver Training Center for your contribution. Your generosity allows us to serve and help even more people who need the Food Center and mobile pantry program. Thank you!
