12th Mobile Food Pantry Site Opens

United Way launched its 12th monthly distribution site for the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center Mobile Food Pantry program at Three Rivers Community College (TRCC). The location is a central one for the surrounding communities and all are welcome to visit the pantry as needed. Sept. 23, Oct. 28, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8 are the upcoming dates for this fall with distribution occuring from 5-6:00 p.m.

There was a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 23rd (in photo at right), and the launch coincided with National Hunger Action Month (HAM). TRCC Students were encouraged to wear orange that day in recognition of Hunger Action Month and to bring in a food item for the school's pantry. United Way has also been promoting HAM throughout the month to increase awareness of hunger and food insecurity in New London County.

Guests at the mobile pantry are asked to only bring their ID and their owns bags or boxes to transport the food. Households receive about a weeks' worth of food including fresh fruit and vegetables, proteins, dairy items, and healthy snacks.

At the inaugural Three Rivers mobile pantry distribution, 81 households were helped representing 155 adults, 89 children, and 17 seniors. The food distributed equals 2,300 meals for those struggling with hunger and food insecurity.

Since 1988, the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, a program of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, has played a key role in providing one of the building blocks to a good quality of life by feeding food insecure individuals and families all across our community. The Food Center provides food and household items to nearly 100 free food distribution sites throughout New London County including shelters, food pantries, after-school programs, day care centers, community meal sites, and programs for the elderly. In 2013, the Food Center helped to feed more than 22,000 people each month through its member feeding sites and the organization’s Mobile Food Pantry program.
