United Way Kicks Off Campaign with Volunteer Reading Event

The 2014 Campaign kicked off at the Cabaret Theater at Mohegan Sun with breakfast and a rally. Campaign Co-chairs Brian Orenstein, CEO of Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, and Wayne Burgess, President of the Southeastern CT Central Labor Council, recognized many of the 200 volunteers that had gathered by calling out their many achievements on behalf of United Way. "We’ve been talking lately about ... what this community needs in order to thrive," noted Orenstein. "And what it really comes down to, what this community needs is you. Each of us can make a difference and together, we collectively make a huge impact."

Guests cheered with pom poms and donned LIVE UNITED buttons, and Burgess encouraged guests to wear them proudly throughout the day, "as a badge of honor, as a champion for good."

Following the kickoff, more than fifty volunteer readers had registered to read Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney to local students in 16 schools. Click here to see photos from the reading event.

Special thanks to Mohegan Sun for sponsoring the Kickoff event and to WBMW Soft Rock 106.5 for being on-hand to interview several United Way volunteers.
