An estimated 80-100 million Americans are currently uninsured or underinsured and can have challenges paying for their prescription medication. That’s why United Way of Southeastern Connecticut partners with FamilyWize to help households meet the cost of their prescription medications. FamilyWize Community Service Partnership is dedicated to providing resources and tools to help consumers understand their options.
FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discounts Cards are distributed by United Way throughout the community. The FamilyWize card is free and helps lower the cost of medicine by an average of 35% or more for people without insurance or who take medications not covered by their plan.
These discount cards can be used by everyone in the community, not just people without insurance. They can even be used by people with health benefits, including Medicaid and Medicare.
The cards are similar to insurance in that they are shown to a pharmacist who then offers a discount which helps clients better afford their prescription medications. It is good for several years and an entire family can use it, even if members have different last names. To date, this program has saved more than 19,000 New London County residents a total of $2,558,869 on their prescription medications, and that number climbs every day. In 2016 alone, there were 7,237 claims which saved residents $222,510.
Not only can you download your free card online, the FamilyWize website has many tools and resources available for free including:
- A drug price lookup tool to help you find the lowest price for your prescription medications;
- A list of participating pharmacies;
- State-by-state list of resources available such as free clinics and food assistance; and
- Health tips and health and wellness news.
To participate in the programs, simply text the word “family” to 700700 and get a free FamilyWize Prescription Discount Card sent to your cell phone by text. Then show the text to your pharmacist and they will automatically apply the FamilyWize discount to the cost of your medicine. You can also download and print out a paper version at www.familywize.org.
