A timely contribution from Dominion Resources to the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center will completely fulfill Thanksgiving food needs at the organization. Dominion announced they will provide a gift of $8,000 to be used to purchase turkeys and traditional and healthy side dishes for holiday baskets for families struggling with hunger and to support community meal sites.
The Food Center’s goal for 2012 was 2,310 turkeys and as of last week, they remained dangerously short of meeting that goal. In 2011, the Food Center provided 1,852 turkeys but community requests surpassed that this year. Since the drive began, numerous businesses and individuals have made donations of turkeys, non-perishable food items and dollars to the Thanksgiving drive. With Dominion’s contribution, all food requests from partner programs will be able to be met.
“Dominion stepped in just in the nick of time,” says Virginia L. Mason, President & CEO of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. “At the end of last week, we were scrambling to figure out how we could help put a nutritious holiday meal on the table for everyone. But now, thanks to the generosity of the community and our friends at Dominion Resources, we can meet our goal and fill all of the requests. We are so fortunate to have a great community partner like Dominion.”
