Free and nutritious meals for kids are available this summer. Summer meals programs are funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Summer Food Service Program and the National School Lunch Program and are administered at the state level by Connecticut’s State Department of Education.
Kids and teens ages 18 and younger can receive free meals at any of the more than 400 sites located throughout the state this summer, including numerous sites in New London County.
Summer meals ensure kids and teens in Connecticut have access to adequate nutrition in the summer so they can come back to school in the fall ready to learn. However, only 1 in 4 of the more than 143,000 Connecticut children who rely on school meals participated in the summer meals programs last summer. Unfortunately, families are often unaware that their kids and teens can receive these free, nutritious meals all summer long by simply going to one of the open locations and enjoying a healthy meal.
