Alternative Spring Break 2007
Although Spring Break seems far away, there are things you can do now to
plan for Alternative Spring Break (ASB) with think MTV and United
Way -- and experience one of the most rewarding weeks of your life.
Building on the great success of the inaugural program in 2006,
think MTV and United Way are partnering again to inspire the next
generation of community leaders into service during Spring Break 2007.
"We are excited that for the second year in a row, we will be
offering the Alternative Spring Break program that will provide young
people a meaningful opportunity to spend time giving back to those in
need in the Gulf Coast or their own communities," said Brian A.
Gallagher, president and CEO of United Way of America. "It's truly a
win-win when we can combine the energy, enthusiasm and positive attitude
of young people with opportunities to make a measurable difference in
people's lives - whether in the Gulf Coast or their own backyards."
Although a year has passed, there is still much work to be done in
the Gulf Coast. In March, 2007 we return with up to 1,000 volunteers for
a massive on-the-ground program in order to continue the rebuilding
process over several weeks. Young people ages 18-24 everywhere are
invited to apply to join us in our long-term storm recovery and relief
efforts. Help rebuild a community or a home during your Spring Break!
United Way and its community partners in the Gulf Region have been
studying the ongoing needs in the Gulf Coast since the storms hit in
2005. Based on this research, ASB projects in 2007 may include
construction and rehabilitation of the following types of community
facilities: childcare and safe play spaces; schools and libraries;
housing; and mental health.
