2006 United Way Campaign Tops $8.1 Million
Electric Boat/EBECSA Receives Chairman's Award of
Excellence for the Fourth Time
United Way Campaign Chair Bill Hakkinen announced
the exciting results of this year’s United Way campaign for Southeastern
Connecticut at The Radisson Hotel in New London on December 14th. More than
200 campaign supporters, agency representatives, and volunteers gathered
to learn that the campaign raised $8,190,000 million. That money will be
invested in local health and human service programs that help 150,000
people in need throughout the year.
Among the event highlights was Electric Boat/Electric Boat Employee
Community Service Association receiving United Way’s most prestigious
honor, the Chairman’s Award of Excellence. This award recognizes one
company that stands out in several areas of excellence when running a
United Way campaign including volunteerism, CEO support, year-round
communication and education, and overall employee giving. The company
has received this prestigious honor three times prior.
Other companies and organizations received Chairman’s Awards for
specific areas of excellence including Pfizer Inc, Mohegan Sun, Dominion
Nuclear Connecticut, Citizens Bank, UPS & Teamsters Local 493, New
London County Mutual, and Chelsea Groton Bank. The Chairman’s Award
Series recognizes companies and organizations of all sizes (based on
number of employees) that excel in their efforts to raise funds for the

Notable gifts to the campaign include:
- Pfizer Inc employees, Pfizer Inc, and Retirees who donated
$4,406,708;
- Electric Boat and the EB Employee Community Services Association
contributed $1,246,535 to United Way;
- Dominion Nuclear Connecticut and its employees contributed more
than $334,000;
- $90,000 from Laurence P. (Jim) and Marjorie Smith;
- Charter Oak Federal Credit Union and its employees donated more
than $41,000;
- UPS and its employees gave a total of $43,000; and
- New London County Mutual and their employees contributed $48,000.
Mr. Hakkinen introduced the incoming 2007 Campaign Chair, Bill
Stanley, Vice President of Development & Community Relations at Lawrence
& Memorial Hospital. Mr. Stanley has volunteered with United Way for
several years including serving as Leadership Giving Chair of the
Campaign Cabinet.
United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is a non-profit organization
that improves the lives of people who live and work in New London County
and strengthens the community through 83 local health and human service
programs. Programs and partnerships that United Way supports improve
community wellness, help children thrive, supply basic human needs, and
provide training and education for jobs.
