We're rolling up our sleeves and getting to work on the United Way Day of Action...and you're invited! We're seeking volunteers to help on Monday, June 23 to clear land and brush at Coogan Farm in Mystic to make way for a planned Giving Garden.
The Day of Action is sponsored by our team lead Mohegan Sun, and each project will be captained by a volunteer from there. Projects will involve cutting back overgrowth, picking stones, spreading seaweed, spreading wood chips, and turning soil in preparation for the garden. Volunteers should wear long pants and sleeves and gloves. Bring your own clippers, shovels, pitch forks, and wheelbarrows, if possible, and be ready to work! Lunch will be provided.
Give one hour or give four hours - all are welcome and the help is greatly appreciated. The Day of Action will run from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Please register yourself, your family, or your team by contacting Heather at United Way - email@example.com.
ABOUT COOGAN FARM
The Robert G. Youngs Foundation provided the seed money in the form of a grant to the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center to create a two-acre garden at the Nature and Heritage Center at Coogan Farm that will grow produce for donation to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center. That healthy, fresh food will help those in our community stuggling with hunger and food insecurity at United Way's Mobile Food Pantry and other local feeding sites.
The agreement creates The Giving Garden, and local horticulturalist Ian Cooke of Mystic has been hired to run the project. “We’re excited to have Ian managing the enterprise given his experience and deep knowledge in both community gardens and horticulture,” said Steven Dodd, chairman of the Coogan Farm Steering Committee.
The two acres will be divided into smaller plots, each of which is available for sponsorship by a business or organization. Local community groups or individuals can garden the plots, and the food grown will go to United Way. During the harvesting season, which Cooke estimates will be from April through November, United Way will collect produce from the garden Monday through Friday, and distribute it via feeding centers and Mobile Food Pantry.
