Become a Volunteer Reader

You're Invited to Be a Volunteer Reader!

Over two reading events last year, United Way mobilized 65 volunteers to read to more than 3,700 local students. Reading is a critical bridge to success in school, work and life, and you can help kids succeed by signing up to be a volunteer reader on Wednesday, October 8, immediately following the United Way Campaign Kickoff event.

Here's how it works:

  • Join us for breakfast and the Campaign Kickoff at the Cabaret Theatre at Mohegan Sun on October 8, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
  • There you will receive the book Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney, a Live United t-shirt, your reading location, follow-up questions you can use to engage the students, activity sheets to leave with teachers, and any other instructions.
  • You will be reading in a school library to several classrooms, one at a time.
  • After leaving the kickoff, you should plan to arrive at the school at 10:30 a.m. and stay until Noon.

For information and to register, contact Sarah at sarah.mcdermott@uwsect.org or 860-464-3323. Please register by September 25.
