All New London County residents are invited (by Gemma herself, below!) to take the 2014 Turkey Challenge! Our goal is to collect 3,500 frozen turkeys prior to Thanksgiving to ensure that every family in need in the region is able to have a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Please consider donating a turkey or even running a drive within your business or organization. Click here to download a poster to help promote your drive (pdf in 11 x 17 format).
Last year, the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, a program of United Way, distributed 3,148 turkeys to families around Southeastern Connecticut through its member agencies. The turkeys are used in traditional holiday meal baskets and at community meals sites.
Financial contributions are also much-appreciated, and a gift of at least $25 is encouraged. For that amount, we can put an entire Thanksgiving meal on the table for a household struggling with hunger and food insecurity. To make a contribution online, please click here and be sure to select the Food Center from the drop-down menu.
The deadline for donations is November 10 so that the Food Center has time to sort and organize donations and then distribute the turkeys to member agencies in time for the holiday. Donations can be delivered to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, located at 374 Broad Street in New London. The Food Center is open between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. And please - frozen turkeys only!
