Volunteer Readers Needed for Next United Way Reading Day

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is partnering with local schools across New London County in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The event on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 is Read Across America, an initiative of the National Education Association (NEA) to gather students, parents, and community members together to share their love and joy of reading. The annual reading day coincides with the birthday of the beloved children’s author.

United Way is inviting volunteer readers to take part in the event. Volunteers will typically read to several classrooms in the school library, and there is an opportunity to read on your own or be paired up with another volunteer. We are seeking volunteers who are conversant in Spanish and comfortable reading aloud in that language.

United Way provides volunteers with Dr. Seuss books to read and then leave with each school library as a donation. Volunteer readers can expect to visit a school from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. There will be an orientation at United Way in Gales Ferry prior to the reading event at 8:30 a.m. for all volunteers to pick up their school assignment and supplies.

The NEA is building a nation of readers with the help of its signature event, Read Across America, an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading.

Space is extremely limited for this popular volunteer event! Early registration is strongly suggested. Registration is closed for this event - thank you.

For more information or if your school is interested in participating, please contact Sarah at United Way by Friday, February 19, sarah.mcdermott@uwsect.org or 860.464.3323.
