On the 2014 United Way Day of Action, more than one hundred volunteers donated their time to transform land at Coogan Farm into a Giving Garden. Mohegan Sun was the team leader for the event and provided a shuttle to and from parking, equipment, and lunch for all volunteers.
Projects included tilling the land, picking out stones and old roots, and spreading mulch and seaweed. Some volunteers cut down bamboo from a section of the farm to be used as frames for tomato plants. By the end of the day, three plots had been cleared and prepped for planting, while planting had already begun in some sections. There will be ten plots eventually available for adoption by local businesses or groups interested in tending the produce that will be planted there.
All of the fresh produce grown at the Giving Garden will be donated to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center for distribution to nearly 100 local feeding sites and at the mobile food pantry. Thank you Mohegan Sun and all of the wonderful volunteers!
