Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from all of us at United Way! Can you believe it is already 2014? I know I can’t. With a new year beginning so does a period of reflection on the past 365 days and sense of hope for a fresh start. Oh and of course, a resolution for 2014.

Learning About The Mobile Food Pantry

Have you seen the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut’s Mobile food pantry truck? It is absolutely awesome! This past Friday I got the opportunity to see the truck in action for the first time and was amazed by the opportunities created by this truck for the local community.

The truck itself was donated by CL&P to United Way and is one of three in the state of CT. It is a custom refrigerated truck that allows for foods such as meats and vegetables to be brought to locations throughout New London County. How neat!!

First Food System Baseline Report Unveiled at United Way

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut hosted the unveiling of Nourishing Change: The New London County Food System Baseline Report. It is the first comprehensive look at the county’s food system and includes in-depth reports on food access, community health, and the childcare and school food environments. The report is a collaboration between United Way and the New London County Food Policy Council, and its recommendations will guide the work of both organizations moving forward.

Mobile Food Pantry and Robert Irvine Event

On December 29, the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is partnering with The Garde Arts Center in New London to introduce its new mobile food pantry to the community. United Way and the Garde will host a food drive to fill the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center’s new mobile pantry on December 29, from 10am - 10pm at the Garde Arts Center located at 325 State Street. We will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items. All food will go to the food center to help feed families in need throughout New London County.

VISTA Reflections: Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief

“As an Americorps VISTA, I felt it was my duty to respond in some way to the call for help following the devastation caused in our community by Hurricane Sandy. I was glad to be able to help by working at the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center. I worked to inform towns and agencies that the food center and other locations in the community would serve as a hub for disaster relief items such as food, water, blankets, batteries, and flashlights. I then helped to sort and distribute the items that had been donated.
