Resources for Filing your Taxes (some are free!)

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation services to individuals and families with a total household income at or below $56,000 in 2019. The program recruits and trains volunteers who help taxpayers prepare and file their tax forms at VITA sites located throughout the state. In Southeastern Connecticut, VITA sites are run by TVCCA.

Last tax season more than 30,000 Connnecticut workers filed their taxes for free and IRS certified volunteers helped hard working families and individuals claim refunds and tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit. It is estimated that almost 25% of qualifying households do not claim the EITC on their returns. You can schedule your VITA appointment online at www.211ct.org/taxhelp and to learn more about the program. VITA sites do require that you schedule an appointment ahead of time.

Would you rather file your tax return online? If you earned more than $56,000 (up to $66,000) last year, visit www.myfreetaxes.com and file your taxes online for free. My Free Taxes is the only free, national, online tax filing product offered by a nonprofit. United Way has made it available to more than 100 million U.S. taxpayers as part of our fight for the financial stability of every person in every community.

Connecticut United Ways and 2-1-1 Connecticut are committed to connecting eligibile filers with free tax preparation services in their communities and helping families claim the tax credits for which they are eligible. In collaboration with community, business, and government partners, Connecticut United Ways strive to help families achieve a more secure financial future.

Or if you choose to go to an H&R Block office to have your taxes filed, please be sure to bring this flyer with you. As part of the company's Nonprofit Referral Program and if you are a new client, H&R Block will donate $20 to United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. The flyer contains a special Nonprofit Referral ID code required for H&R Block tax preparers to enter on a client transaction screen when completing your taxes. Find an office near you and make an appointment at hrblock.com or blockadvisors.com.
