United Way seeks new member agencies for Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center

Shelves of nonperishable food items at a pantryUnited Way of Southeastern Connecticut is seeking proposals for new member agencies to the organization’s Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center (Food Center). The goal is to increase food access to underrepresented populations with high food insecurity rates.

The USDA defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household in order to live an active, healthy life. New London County experiences food insecurity at a rate of 12.2%; the second highest rate of food insecurity in Connecticut. To address the need, the Food Center is actively seeking new members to expand the existing local emergency feeding system. Up to ten new member programs will be added.

As a member program, you are eligible to shop weekly at the Food Center to stock or supplement your feeding site, at no cost. Through sourcing, the Food Center is committed to maintaining a variety of products on hand however, programs should consider having a food budget or additional means of procuring food to fully meet the needs of the community they serve.
