Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from all of us at United Way! Can you believe it is already 2014? I know I can’t. With a new year beginning so does a period of reflection on the past 365 days and sense of hope for a fresh start. Oh and of course, a resolution for 2014.

Did you make a resolution for the New Year? Personally I have never been big on this, but figured I would give it a shot this time around.  First I had to choose one! I think there are a lot of things I could work on- going to the gym more regularly, spending less on things I don’t need, being better at keeping in contact with friends and loved ones, etc. But this year I think I will keep those as goals towards my resolution- to Live United.

Our motto at United Way is Live United, so that is my resolution for 2014. The first step for me will be deciding exactly what it means to Live United.

Kindness is this first thing that comes to mind. I think one of my ventures will be to perform small random acts of kindness for others. I have always loved this concept, but tend to get so busy in my own happenings that I forget about it. What better way to begin Living United that spreading a bit of kindness when I can? For now I am going to start my goal at one act a week- 52 for the year.

Next on my goals towards this resolution will be finding new ways to get more involved in my new community. With having just recently moved to Groton I have a lot to learn about the area. I hope to do this by volunteering more and getting involved with new organizations in the surrounding communities.  I love volunteering and miss being involved the way I was in college- time to fix this!

My final thought- for now- on how I am going to fulfill my resolution will be to attempt to learn more about people I interact with on a regular basis but don’t really know. I think sometimes I am guilty of asking people how they are, without truly looking for an honest response- it becomes more of a habit. If I am going to Live United I should learn more about acquaintances likes and dislikes hopes and needs so I can be a better coworker, friend, associate.

Do you have a resolution for the New Year? Or more ideas on how to Live United? If so I would love to hear about them, post a comment below or on our Facebook page!
