August Volunteer Spotlight: Maria Loss

For our August Volunteer of the Month spotlight, we are honoring Maria Loss of East Lyme.  Unfortunately, Maria passed away in July. We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by her loss. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who worked with her. But we want to take a moment to honor her and the amazing volunteer service she provided to the Food Bank.

Maria volunteered twice a week, every week, at the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Bank since 2013. She dedicated these last 6 years to improving her community and making New London County a better place for all. Maria’s reputation among volunteers is one of the strongest. “Maria was an extremely hard worker but always had a smile on her face and made the volunteering fun! She was a true gem!” says one volunteer who worked alongside her. She took on the role of a true leader, showing new volunteers the ropes while encouraging regular volunteers to continue their good work.

Maria always had a smile on her face. One volunteer said, “She was very inspirational, because, with the health issues she was dealing with, and she still managed to come in and volunteer every week.”

Another volunteer said, “Maria was a very special person. She always had a positive attitude no matter how she may have been feeling. You never heard her complain. Maria did so much for other people. I don’t know if she would ever agree but she inspired others.”

Maria’s impact on the community is equal to the impact she has made on everyone who had the pleasure of working with her. Below are even more quotes and thoughts on Maria from United Way staff and other volunteers. Maria, we will miss you!

“Maria was the sweetest person. She was always happy and grateful, and she was such a hard worker - she didn’t like to be idle.  She was truly awe-inspiring.  Volunteering here will not be the same without her.”

“I will never forget Maria.  She was an inspiration to me and all who knew her.  And an extraordinary volunteer!!  I’m so glad she was in my life”

“Maria will be greatly missed by everyone whose life she touched.”

“I feel lucky to have known Maria.  She was so kind and had a smile for everyone.  She worked so hard to help others-an inspiration.”

“Maria was the sweetest lady.  A gentle soul.  Always helpful, kind, and patient.  She is missed.”
