ALICE: The 2025 Update on Financial Hardship in CT

ALICE® is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county. Households below the ALICE Threshold — ALICE households plus those in poverty — can’t afford the basics in the communities where they live.

Free Coffee Friday at Outer Light

Mark your calendar for Friday, September 12 at Outer Light Brewing Company, 266 Bridge Street in Groton. From 8–10 a.m., your coffee is on the house, from your friends at United Way of Southeastern Connecticut.

Why? Because we’re brewing more than just coffee—we’re brewing hope.

This event celebrates Outer Light’s brand-new coffee shop and shines a light on our Housed and Hopeful Campaign, tackling homelessness right here in New London County. Stop by, grab a free cup, and discover how we can mobilize our community together to create lasting change.

United Way Launches “Keeping Families Housed & Hopeful” Campaign to Address Housing Crisis

Housing costs in Southeastern Connecticut have skyrocketed, rising 40% in just three years for low-income families. Last year alone, 1,192 people experienced homelessness in the region—marking a 47% increase over the last two years. With federal emergency funds drying up, local families are facing housing instability at alarming rates.
