United Way Launches New Program to Empower High School Students in Constructive Dialogue

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is announcing the launch of the Constructive Dialogue Collaborative Program, a dynamic initiative designed to equip high school students with essential communication skills to engage in meaningful discussions across different perspectives. This program aligns with United Way’s commitment to fostering Youth Opportunity, one of the four impact areas at United Way, empowering the next generation to realize their full potential.

“At United Way we believe, more now than ever, that empowering young people with the ability to engage in conversations that find common ground and work towards solutions rather than winning an argument or imposing opinion is essential for building stronger, more connected communities,” said Dina Sears-Graves, President and CEO of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. “This program will help students not only develop critical thinking skills but also cultivate empathy and understanding. We are excited to offer this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our students and society as a whole.”

The Constructive Dialogue Collaborative Program is an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills, engage in respectful discussions, and contribute to a more inclusive society. The curriculum is a combination of in-person and online sessions.

Participants will learn to:

  • Navigate political and social divides with respect.
  • Build empathy and understanding with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Foster inclusive and cohesive communities.
  • Gain essential skills for college and career success.

Students who complete all program requirements will receive:

  • A $100 incentive
  • A certificate of completion
  • A letter of recommendation to support their academic and career pursuits

The Constructive Dialogue Collaborative Program is designed to help students develop the skills and mindset necessary for engaging in constructive conversations—ones that focus on mutual understanding rather than debate or persuasion. The program incorporates the Perspectives curriculum from the Constructive Dialogue Institute, providing students with proven tools to engage in thoughtful, respectful discussions with those who hold different beliefs and values.
